European Parliament recognises Scotland’s remain vote as Brexit begins

SNP welcome European Parliament recognition of Scotland’s Remain result

THE RESOLUTION OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT on Brexit includes the democratic votes of Scotland and Northern Ireland to remain in the EU.

Coordinated between leaders of the conservative, socialist, liberal, and green groups of the parliament, the motion proposes the policy of the parliament for future Brexit talks. The parliament will hold a veto on any eventual Brexit deal.

Point N in the agreement states: “...a large number of United Kingdom citizens, including a majority in Northern Ireland and Scotland, voted to remain in the European Union.”

“The acknowledgement of Scotland’s remain vote shows a clear will in Brussels to engage with the conundrum we face as a Remain voting nation within the UK.” Alyn Smith MEP

The plan, outlined by Guy Verhofstadt Coordinator and Chair of the ALDE Group and Parliament President Antonio Tajani in a press conference, include taking a strong line on the order of discussions - rejecting Tory hopes of ‘parallel’ discussions on the divorce settlement and the UK’s future relationship with the EU.

The inclusion of Scotland’s vote to remain in the text was welcomed by SNP politicians.

Alyn Smith MEP said: “The acknowledgement of Scotland’s remain vote shows a clear will in Brussels to engage with the conundrum we face as a Remain voting nation within the UK.

“The rest of the draft motion is for the most part common sense and should not surprise anyone. That the UK must honour its obligations and cannot sign trade deals until we have left the EU is simply a matter of law.

“I hope that the UK Government will approach the negotiations in a pragmatic and constructive way, though I must admit, their track record to date does not inspire confidence. The UK constitution clearly is what it is, and the UK is the member state, but Scotland will not be silent within this process, and that has been recognised by the parliament.”

Joan McAlpine MSP, who convenes Holyrood's Europe Committee, added: “It is clearly welcome that the European Parliament’s draft acknowledges the will of the Scottish people. Scotland clearly voted to remain but the UK Government has simply ignored this and refuses to constructively engage with the Scottish Government to find a solution.”

The formal letter to begin the Tory’s exit from the European Union failed to propose a compromise agreement for Scotland, as set out by the Scottish Government and Parliament.

So does this imply what I think it does? That the EU would be willing to negotiate separately with Scotland/NI and go over the head of Theresa May's wishes? Or am I being too hopeful?

The first comment is spam which is entirely unrelated to Scotland, the EU, or Brexit. I think it should be removed.

I think it's rather beautiful, if unintentionally, quite relevant spam :-)

I’ve made a petition – will you sign it?

My petition:

Obey the clearly expressed Will of the Sovereign People of Scotland.

On 23/06/16 the People of Scotland gave voice to their Sovereign Will and chose for the UK to Remain a member of the EU.

The only legitimate course of action is for the Government to withdraw Leave voting regions and Nations from the EU in the same manner as Denmark withdrew Greenland.

As has been settled in 'MacCormack vs the Lord Advocate' in the Court of Session and subsequently in the Supreme Court in 'AXA vs the Scottish Government' the people of Scotland are Sovereign and their Will supercedes any other legal authority in the United Kingdom with regards to Scotland.

No authority has ever had the power to strip the Scots of their Sovereignty and they have never willingly surrendered it.

Regardless of any periods where illegitimate authorities have attempted to deny or ignore the Sovereign Will of the People of Scotland that legitimate Sovereignty has existed unbroken since its first Declaration in Arbroath in 1320.
