US Midterms: CommonSpace talks Trump, Democratic strategy and American socialism with DSA activist John Leavitt

CommonSpace speaks with writer and activist John Leavitt about what can be learned from the US midterms.

YESTERDAY’S US MIDTERM ELECTIONS have seen the Democratic Party take back control of the House of Representatives, but also saw the Republicans tighten their grip on the Senate, leaving both sides of America’s two party system with victories to trumpet and losses to mourn.

In the wake of these fragmented results, CommonSpace spoke with John Leavitt, writer, cartoonist, activist and member of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), which saw a number of its endorsed candidates achieve high-profile victories, including the insurgent representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and senator Julia Salazar, both from Leavitt’s home turf of New York.

CommonSpace reporter Sean Bell discusses with Leavitt what the midterm results mean for the rapidly ascendant DSA, the broader implications for the Democratic Party, and the battered state of Trumpism in 2018.
